Jazz & Wind Ensembles Joint Concert

Event name: Jazz & Wind Ensembles Joint Concert
Date: February 28, 2013
Time: 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Location: Olin Theater
Event Type: Concerts & Performances
Description: The Roanoke College Jazz & Wind Ensembles will perform under the director of Dr. Joseph Blaha. In a concert themed “The Broadway Connection,” Ms. Ruth Trochim, Roanoke College junior music major will be the evening’s featured piano soloist. The Jazz Ensemble will perform contemporary and traditional big band compositions and arrangements by Miles Davis, Buddy Rich, Frank Mantooth and others. “The Broadway Connection” here will be provided by vocalist and trombonist Alejandro Ramos singing Broadway composer George Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day (in Old London Town)”—a tune actually featured in the Hollywood musical, A Damsel in Distress, starring Fred Astaire. Continuing the theme of “The Broadway Connection,” the Wind Ensemble will perform works by composers Leonard Bernstein and John Philip Sousa whose musicals have appeared on Broadway stages. Selections from the hit musical Les Miserables and the ever popular Rhapsody in Blue are also on the evening’s program. George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue was composed for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in 1924 as a demonstration of how American music could blend jazz and classical ideas.
